Importance of Rapid Antigen Test in Determining Covid-19 Cases in Australia

by | Aug 16, 2022 | blog

The number of cases of the Omicron sub-variant in Australia is increasing. In fact, the country is bracing for its third wave of BA.4 and BA.5 in the coming weeks. Since both present immunities from the available vaccines, there is a high chance that infection rates will go up significantly. These two are currently the more dominant strains and are now a cause for concern for government agencies.

When Were They Detected?

The BA.4 strain was first detected in South Africa in January of this year. The BA.5 strain was detected just a month after in the same country. It appears that they are offshoots of the BA.2 strain since they have the same mutations. In addition, they also exhibit additional mutations that have an impact on how transmissible they are.

As was stated before, these two are adept at evading immunity which is why we are seeing a rise in reinfection. Reinfection refers to a new infection just 12 weeks from the last infection. However, there are those that have been reinfected within the span of 12 weeks. This means that there is a high chance that they are already in their 3rd or 4th reinfection.

The capacity for PCR testing is finite. Add to these factors like the inability to pool together samples with high positivity rates, supply chain constraints, and the effects of high community transmission among staff and employees, there is a growing need for faster diagnosis to help stem the rapid progress of infection.

Rapid Antigen Testing Kits Can Help Manage Outbreaks

The Australian Health Protection Principal Committee has released a statement regarding the use of Rapid Antigen Testing for high community prevalence. This is to help stem the rapid rise of infection of the new Omicron sub-variants. The committee proposes that the rapid antigen tests will be used with the following goals in mind:

An alternative diagnostic tool to PCR testing for those communities or individuals that are at a high risk of catching Covid-19. In the case of high infection, the results of the rapid antigen test can be considered a diagnosis.
Manage transmission in a household, workplace, and more. With companies having access to rapid antigen tests, they are in a much better position to determine if there is a growing number of infected and then take precautions as they see fit.
Rapid Antigen Testing can be used in settings where individuals are at high risk of infection. This includes offices, hospitals, and even emergency services.
